Asheville Theater Radio will broadcast live at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday, hosted by local theater personality Jeff Catanese.

WPVM 103.7 FM, Asheville’s listener-supported, community radio station is proud to announce the addition of “Asheville Theater Radio” to their lineup of local artistic and cultural programming.

The show will be hosted by local theater personality Jeff Catanese, and will be broadcast live every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The show will also stream live on wpvmfm.org, and be archived on that same site for listening anytime.

“Asheville Theater Radio” will seek to provide a voice to the growing Western North Carolina theater scene and will feature guests from the theater community, call-in segments, opinions, chats and, of course, a run-down of local shows, events and auditions.

Since moving to Asheville from New York City five years ago, Mr. Catanese has been a strong presence in the local theater scene, directing shows at Asheville Community Theatre and Montford Park Players, acting for those and many other companies, teaching acting to kids in area schools and producing and directing several plays with Attic Salt Theatre Company, a company he co-founded 17 years ago.

Mr. Catanese is seeking to expand and strengthen the Asheville theater community with this new show. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve seen Asheville become a formidable town for theater,” he said. “I’d love to see us evolve from that ‘town with theater’ into a true ‘theater town.’ I hope having a dedicated radio presence will help that cause.”

With the rapid blossoming of independent theater companies in the area, there’s enough going on to have new guests every week with something specific to plug, but the show also intends to feature segments with local theater personalities to discuss some of the triumphs and travails that happen “on the boards.”

“Any burgeoning theater community faces troubles,” said Mr. Catanese. “I’d very much like to address those troubles, while also showcasing the many successes that our town producers, directors, actors and even patrons have created.”

WPVM-FM has brought Asheville listeners the unique “Voices of Asheville” for years under the moniker MAIN-FM. The station is a commercial-free, listener-supported, volunteer-programmed, low-power FM radio station managed by the Friends of WPVM. A registered non-profit, founded to provide independent media to the Asheville community. WPVM is committed to presenting the best of the cultural, artistic and musical endeavors, organizations and activities that makes our community unique.

WPVM’s mission is to be the beacon of Asheville’s creative and cultural voice for the community and to broadcast to the world via WPVMfm.org all that is special about our artistic and cultural heritage.
