Folkmoot Festival Events in Waynesville

Folkmoot has a long list of exciting events happening in Waynesville, NC for this year’s festival!  

A special preview, meet and greet performance starts the festival at Bearwaters Brewing Company, 130 Frazier St, on Wednesday July 20th at 6:00pm. Bearwaters will be releasing their delicious seasonal beer, the Folkmalt Mango Lager.

On Friday, July 22nd at 6:30pm, experience Waynesville’s annual Mountain Street Dance featuring local bands and dance teams.

Three FREE events are taking place on Saturday, July 23rd that are fun for the whole family! The day begins with the Farmer’s Market Stroll with Folkmoot’s interntional guests at the Waynesville Historic Farmer’s Market, 250 Pigeon St, at 8:30am.

At 10:00am, the fun moves to Main Street for the Parade of Nations, which features not only Folkmoot’s international groups, but also local musicians, dance teams, giant puppeteers, and stilt walkers. After the parade, head on over to Folkmoot Friendship Center, (historic Hazelwood School), 112 Virginia Ave, for the Many Cultures Carnival which includes crafts, games, dance lessons and three pay performances in the Sam Love Queen Auditorium.

On Sunday, July 24th, join the performers for lunch, cultural conversation, and a performance at the First United Methodist Church, 566 Haywood Street. Lunch will be served in the Christian Growth Center at 12:00pm, $10 Adults/$5 Children. Cultural conversation begins at 1:00pm in the Christian Growth Center and is free for all ages. Five of the international groups will be performing at 2:15pm in the sanctuary, $15 Adults/$5 Children.

International Day is a festival favorite and will be held on Saturday, July 30th from 10am-5pm on Main Street. Entertainment will include two stages, cultural performances and community lessons taught by the dance troupes.

Folkmoot Festival Events in Asheville

Folkmoot, North Carolina’s International Festival, is coming to Asheville for multiple exciting events!

The first event taking place in Asheville is on Wednesday, July 27th at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheater, 90 Gay St, at 7;00pm. This performance features five talented international groups sharing their culture through dance, traditional costumes and music. Children/Student tickets are $5 and Adult tickets are $16. Experience the first-ever Folkmoot Parade to be held in downtown Asheville at Pack Square Park on Friday, July 29 at 4:00pm. This will be a festive occasion that is FREE and fun for the entire family!

After the parade, at 7:00pm on July 29th, all of the international groups will join the Stuart Family Band and the Dixie Darlins for a performance at the Diana Wortham Theatre, 2 S Pack Square, Asheville, NC.  Tickets can be purchased through the Diana Wortham Theatre by phone (828)-257-4530 or online at www.dwtheatre.com.

An exciting new addition to this year’s festival is an International Dance Party at the Orange Peel, 101 Biltmore Ave. Join DJ Oso Rey and all of the international troupes for music and dance on Saturday, July 30. Doors open at 8:00pm and the dance party starts at 9:00pm. This event is for ages 16+ and tickets are $15.

Folkmoot USA, North Carolina’s International Festival, is a two-week celebration of the world’s cultural heritage through folk music and dance. Held each summer throughout the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, Folkmoot features performers sharing their culture through colorful, authentic, and original reproduction costumes, lively dance, and traditional music.

Folkmoot Dance Party at the Orange Peel

PWP_0534Join DJ Oso Rey and 200 dance ambassadors from Ghana, Japan, France, Romania, Dominican Republic, Peru, China, Poland, Finland, Cherokee, and the US Mexico Ballet for an international dance party with iconic American and international dance music.

The dance party takes place at the Orange Peel, 101 Biltmore Ave, in Asheville, NC on Saturday, July 30. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm. This event is for ages 16+ and tickets are $15.

Oso Rey is a California songwriter/producer/DJ who has called Asheville home for the past decade. His diverse reach in music over the past 20 years has allowed him to open for groups such as No Doubt, Magic!, the Bug, Post Malone, and Sublime. He will be curating an eclectic mix for FOLKMOOT’s dance party, drawing from all of the various countries’ music being represented in the festival for 2016.

“It’s an honor to curate Folkmoot’s first dance party! Creating a soundtrack to celebrate so many amazing cultures makes me focus on all of our commonalities. It’s going to be a great night!” said DJ Oso Rey.
