MOREHEAD, NC. – Grammy Award-winning bluegrass sensation the Steep Canyon Rangers will be performing on September 21 at Carteret Community Theatre in Morehead, NC in support of their new album RADIO which was released via Rounder Records on August 28 and produced by veteran Dobro virtuoso Jerry Douglas, who, in addition to his work with Alison Krauss & Union Station, has a distinguished track record as a producer and sideman for a wide range of artists – as well as his own stellar career as a recording artist.

The new release from Steep Canyon Rangers is a highly anticipated project showcasing the band’s powerful songwriting, dynamic instrumental virtuosity, and high-energy performance styles. At the heartbeat of the album is the intriguing and invigorating songwriting of band members Graham Sharp and Charles Humphrey. To ignite a spark and continue their ever-progressing bluegrass sound, the Rangers have added North Carolina native and long time touring member Mike Ashworth on drums. Ashworth enhances the pulse that has already been created by the ensemble and adds clarity to the modern sound. “RADIO travels the dial from top to bottom,” says Sharp “The album tunes into the rock channel for a little while, then the blues, then country, pop and, of course, bluegrass.”

“The Steep Canyon Rangers, with whom I have had the great pleasure of touring and have shared the wonderful honor of IBMA’s Entertainer of the Year Award,” says multifaceted comedian, author, and musician Steve Martin, “are not only great musicians who continue to explore both the new and old styles of bluegrass and bring a fresh energy to the traditions of American music, but they are also really fun on a bus.” Martin invited the band to tour and record with him after a chance meeting at a party, resulting in 2011’s Grammy-nominated Rare Bird Alert and a live CD/DVD featuring Martin and Edie Brickell that was also aired as a PBS special. In early 2016, Martin and Brickell brought their new musical Bright Star to the stage, giving to the Rangers valuable time to record and support the upcoming album.
The Steep Canyon Rangers will also maintain a rigorous tour schedule going into 2016 featuring stops in California, Nevada and several dates in their home state of North Carolina, as well as a broad array of music festivals. They are also in the process of curating the 2016 edition of their popular Mountain Song Festival, hosted in the band’s home base of Brevard, NC. These and all 2016 Steep Canyon Rangers performances are presented by Dale’s Pale Ale. $1 from every ticket sold goes to benefit the CAN’d Aid Foundation, the charitable arm of Steep Canyon Rangers’ partner Oskar Blues Brewery. The Steep Canyon Rangers serve as “TUNES Ambassador’s” for CAN’d Aid; together they help enable young aspiring musicians by providing instruments and lessons and other learning opportunities. For a full schedule, visit: http://www.steepcanyon.com/.
